How can I receive notifications that I have voicemails?
MCPilgrim, as someone who relies on receiving voicemail notifications, I know how important it is for you to receive a notification when you receive a voicemail and we want to help. How do you check your voicemails? Do you dial *86 and make the call or do you use the Visual Voicemail app?
Tap the green phone icon and hen tap on the three black dots that are located on the upper right hand side of the screen. Now tap on Voicemail and then on Notifications. Is the Show Notifications switch turned on ?

Do you have a VZW branded version of your phone or an unlocked version?
You should also check your MyVerizon account online to verify if your line is provisioned for the basic visual voicemail or the basic non-visual voicemail?
