Each smartphone on a Share Everything Plan has a $40 monthly access fee, basic phones are $30 per month. This is in addition to the data plan charge (in your case, $70).

Think of the $40 as the voice part (which also includes messaging) and the $70 (in your case) as the data part.
For a smartphone, you need both parts.

You can look at this way, on the old nationwide plans your line access was 9.99. your data plan standard would be 30.00 and then your plan itself was 50-100$ depending on the plan. However, this is the structure for family plans, which is the main point of the shared plan, for multiple lines. If you dont like that, you can call customer service, and have them look at nationwide plans for single lines. For example. nationwide 450 39.99 1000msgs 10.00 and 2gb data package 30.00 or 5gb data package for 50.00 monthly bill= 79.99 or 99.99 a month, You choose.
