Text messaging after 4.3 update

The update to 4.3 added user profile icons to texting.  This takes up an unreasonable amount of screen real estate.  They had to move the messaging timestamp beneath the text balloon in order to fit the icon on the screen.  Now there is less of chat log on the screen.  Decreasing the font size to "tiny" doesn't help.  I don't see any way in the text settings to turn this off.  Is there no way to remove the profile icons from the chat log?  Almost all of my friends are the default icon anyway, because nobody has taken the time to set up their profile picture.
