Why don't apps work when I am on the phone?

Just upgraded to the Note 5 so far very disappointed GPS, email, etc does not work while on the phone. If this is an idle phone for business user then how is it helpful when you cannot conduct the basis on this device.

I saw somewhere else on the forums on how to make a change to Advanced Network or something like that, using the Settings menu. Prior to that I had just called 611 and they made the change for me to use Internet functions while I was on the phone. Works fine now.
