using a foreign SIM on a Verizon Samsung Note 4

I just bought a foreign GSM SIM for my Samsung Note 4.  I installed the SIM by removing the SIM that Verizon had installed, presumably for international service where the rest of the world is GSM.  Now, however, it seems that regardless of the settings (Global, GSM, CDMA) I can no longer get my Verizon service while at home in the US.  My previous Verizon phone, an HTC Trophy, allowed me to install a GSM SIM card and switch in the settings between GSM and the Verizon CDMA network while I was in the US.  Question - Am I doing something wrong?  Or must I physically remove and replace the SIM card when going to and from the US?  I thought that CDMA did not use SIM cards.  Thank you.

P.S.  I purchased this phone at full retail price rather than at the substantial discount under the upgrade plan just so I would have an unlocked phone.
