Original adapter and cable?
I'd perform a factory data reset (FDR) backing up anything important first. I would try charging again. If still slow (and that is very slow, unless "all night" for you means 2 hours)...
Then I would suspect a bad charger or cable. I would get an OEM replacement adapter and cable off Amazon or ebay: Search for Samsung OEM S8 Charger
You can get something from Amazon w/Prime, sometimes in 1 day or same day...
If that didn't fix the issue, then I would suspect the phone, and I'd immediately replace it.

The phone was at 28% when I plugged in at 8:00 PM and at 7 AM it was at 51%. I did a phone check, everything was ok. I will try FDR if that doesn't work it is back to the store, everything is less than 48 hours old.

That would help, certainly, but that should not be necessary. I never shut mine phone off to charge.

When you say brand new how long has it been in your possession? Did you get it from a Verizon store or did you get it on line? The reason I ask is that I think you have like 14-15 days to return it. If you have been having this problem right out of the box then I would definitely return it

I knew from my 6 edge it charges faster if off. I totally shut the phone down, waited a few seconds then back on. It charged on the doc in about an hour. Thank you all for your ideas and help.

One needs to be careful order 'after market' chargers. I ordered a fast charger from Amazon that turned out not to be a fast charger even thought it said on it that it was. Has I checked the Amazon reviews, I would have seen a consistent pattern of complaints saying it really wasn't a fast charger.
