This morning my S5 would not rotate. Tried all the possible cures posted here and other places except I did not do a factory reset, nothing helped.
What DID work was that I powered it down, removed the battery, removed the SD card, cleaned everything out with a microfiber cloth and a cotton swab, then reassembled. Works fine now.
Wanted to post to hopefully help someone else out.

that was an easy fix....i would bet that removing the battery did the trick but when you did it all at once, it's hard to say for sure.

I doubt this was a long term fix as I tried this and everything else including re-flashing with older firmware. Samsung and Verizon provided zero help. I even bought a new S5 and that stopped working on the new S5 after the 6.0.1 firmware upgrade. I finally fixed it by removing the built in Weather widget. I tried a different weather widget and that stopped the rotation also. I now use the Weather Bug App and no widgets and have no screen rotation issues for two days. I also fixed it on my original S5.

rpetras, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!!
My screen rotation also stopped working after the 6.0.1 firmware upgrade. I also fixed it by removing the built in Weather widget. However, I had to do a "wipe cache partition" afterwards; just removing the widget alone (and rebooting) didn't get the job done.
How to wipe the cache partition of an S5
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
- When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
- When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
- Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.

How do you remove the built in weather app?

That is a great question. Answers are our specialty. If the app is built in and came with the device, there is not a way to remove it.

I can confirm, this fixed my problem.
I factory reset my phone multiple times. The screen rotation would work for a few minutes and then stop working again. I deleted the weather widget off of the home screen and then followed the Cache wipe procedure above and my phone now rotates like normal.
THANK YOU!!!!

This worked perfectly for me. Took about a 90 seconds.
