Help: Eligible for upgrade, but Samsung concerns me!

I've been eligible for 2 months, and need an upgrade from my Samsung Droid Charge.  I am considering the S4, but am VERY apprehensive about going to another Samsung phone especially while with Verizon.  Platform updates with the Verizon/Samsung combo have been a joke.  I am not the guy who goes out and buys the newest phone just to have the cool new toy...I actually use the phone daily for business and prefer to get discounted upgrades when eligible.

The specs on the S4 are great, and I need a solid dual or quad core processor for multi-tasking.  I access data constantly, and look forward to an upgrade as my Charge lags while multi-tasking.  I consistently keep, and access, anywhere from 18-22 gb of data stored on my SD. I keep a VERY MINIMAL amount of content in the internal storage.

Any suggestions on the right phone? The DNA's specs are ideal, but no external storage is a "deal-breaker", and the fear of no future platform upgrades on any Samsung device has me scratching my head as to what the best alternative may be??  ANY word on HTC One hitting Verizon!?!?

These concerns, coupled with losing my unlimited data have me looking elsewhere...don't really want to switch from the coverage!

-Need some thought PLEASE!

Updates for phones period will be the same with any phone you have on VZW.  They are slow or non existent so to speak except on the Iphone VZW does not have much control on Iphone per say.  VZW is always the last to get a new phone.  VZW is always the last to do software updates.  You might just call it fact of life.  You have to be patient.  I am waiting on the S4 with 32 gb.  I have the S3 with 32 gb but by the time they get the S4 I may end up waiting for some different phone.  I won't change to another carrier just because of a phone.  I stay with VZW as it is the only one that is reliable at my home and places I go most of the time.

I don't understand all the concern some people have about updates of their phone.  I would rather have a phone that works correctly "out-of-the-box" and NEVER needs an update.  My Motorola Droid Razr Maxx worked perfectly on GB, ICS, and now on JB.  However, there is nothing it can do now that it couldn't do the day I bought it 16 months ago that is of any significance to me.  It makes and receives calls, text, and email.  It accesses the internet and the hotspot feature is great.  It always works perfectly.
