On my prior Galaxy S5, new mail was indicated by the square "M" icon at the top edge of the screen, but there was no sound. How can I get the same result on the S7 Edge? I tinkered with the gmail app and android notification and sound settings, but it seems the only choices are icon with sound or no icon with no sound.
Thanks.

You can turn off the sound notification in the Gmail app, here's how:
Open Gamil
Touch the three horizontal bars next to inbox
Scroll all the way to the bottom and choose Settings
Choose the email address (if you have more than one) that you want to edit
Choose the fourth selection from the top (should be Inbox sound & vibrate)
Choose Sound (scroll to the top and choose Silent if you want no sound)

If you add your Gmail account to the stock Email app in your S7 Edge, you'll be able to set it up for a visual indication of new messages without any audible notification.
It won't differentiate between Gmail and other accounts, but, it will allow for visual only notification.

Thanks for that suggestion. Will the stock email app generally work about the same as the Gmail app (or maybe better)?

I haven't really used the Gmail app in quite a while. But, I get good notifications using the stock app.

Thanks for that suggestion. It seems to have done the trick.
