How do I get text notifications on the lock screen?

How do I get my text notifications on my lock screen? I used to get little pop ups under my clock and I can't get it back.

Check the notification settings for active display or other options for a visual notification.

I have also lost my lock screen notifications - as well as the audio/sound when any text arrives.  Even having the alert set to only vibrate doesn't work - I don't see any notification of a new text until I'm at the home screen to see the notification on app icon.  I've even lost the pop-up bubble that would allow me to preview the first few lines of the text from the lock screen.

This behavior started after the latest system update.
