I am purchasing an unlocked s9 . Is there a date for wifi calling capability to be available for an unlocked phone being brought onto verizon.

I have been a very long time verizon customer and would like to stay with them, however they are not offering the larger storage size s9  and also currently are nore expensive than than the unlocked s9  directly from samsung. And wifi calling is something that I want to have. It is enough of a reason for me to switch carriers if necessary and no fix is in sight

No date is available when wifi calling will be available for this device or if it will ever be available.

Ask Samsung.

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

Hello, and thank you for taking the time to reach out to us, Marshallk9. We're here to assist you further with the concerns you have regarding the S9 and S9 Plus. To start, let's continue to gather more details pertaining to this preference of yours. Is the S9 the only device you are looking into? The reason we say this, is that the Note 9 has recently came out. This would come in the sizes of 128GB and 512GB of storage memory. This, could be another option we look into, however we want to get more details on the usage of your device. What are the things you like to do with your device which would require you to have more storage in the device then what the S9 offers?

I like the concept of the note, but I am afraid it's just a little too large for me.  Also, it is significantly more expensive, especially as the storage increases. I am not sure exactly what my plans are, but on my last 2 phones (s5 and s7) I had storage space issues with both.  I had 64gb SD cards in both and used them to the best of my abilities.  I do not want to have to worry about storage space for updates, apps, etc. I will be putting a 200gb card into my next phone and want the internal storage to be much larger also so I never need to worry.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I did consider the note 9 but thought overall it was just a little to big physically for me  (even the s9+ is a big change for me that I'm going to have to get used to).  If verizon had offered s9+ in larger than 64gb sizes and had prices comparable to buying direct from samsung or on amazon, I would have certainly purchased thru verizon as I always have in the past. This time, I looked outside of verizon for the first time because they didn't offer the best of what's available.

I stI'll really hope that verizon will allow a software fix that will allow an unlocked phone to make calls over wifi  (using verizon service and my number and not having to use a WiFi calling app to do so).  It's silly that they would want to restrict WiFi calling from someone purchasing their service, and I have learned thru research that it is not a Samsung issue, but rather completely a verizon issue (one that has a simple updateable solution, just they choose not to do so). Bot sure of the logic there, unless they want their customers to be looking into alternative providers.  I always stayed with verizon bc they were the best and had the most to offer, this is now not the case - other providers may have more to offer.

Why don't you just by the phone from VZW?

2 reasons... first they only have the 64gb model available and I need greater ants of internal storage (ran out on my last 2 phones and don't like feeling like I have to manage my storage carefully). And second of all, buying from amazon or Samsung direct so $200 less expensive. That's a big difference. And less bloatware taking up space on the phone.

Those are the reasons. The only reason I thought about it, was so I could still use wifi calling.  But if I need the wifi calling, I would just end up switching carriers. I have been with verizon for many years, but if they can't or won't deliver what I need, I have other options (not like with cable Companies).

As the heart of our Verizon family, your voice is most important, Marshallk9. We want you to know that your feedback will be heard regarding the story memory in the Samsung devices. We can certainly continue to review the unlocked device to make calls over Wi-Fi. The reason we ask, is that currently, we do not lock our 4G devices, other than our 4G Phone-in-the-Box Prepaid phones. Our 4G Phone-in-a-Box phones may only be used with Verizon Prepaid service for 1 year from original activation date or until payments in the amount specified on the back of the Phone-in-a-Box package are added to the Prepaid account. This is to partially offset the subsidy we provide to make our 4G Phone-in-the-Box Prepaid phones more affordable to customers. Once either of the criteria above is satisfied, you can dial *611 from your Verizon Wireless Prepaid phone or call 888.294.6804 and we will provide you with programming instructions so you can unlock your phone. If the user guide for your phone does not provide instructions to access the programming menu, we can help you with that as well. However, PLEASE NOTE: “Unlocking” a device refers only to disabling software that would prevent a consumer from attempting to activate a device designed for one carrier’s network on another carrier’s network. Due to differing technologies, an unlocked Verizon Wireless device may not work – or may experience limited functionality – on another carrier’s network. Please let us know if you'd like to review this further as we're right here ready to provide more help if needed.

Marshallk9,

The last thing we would want is to see you leave our wireless family as we greatly appreciate your business. Having a phone that will fit your needs is definitely important. I appreciate all the insight that you've provided to us. Our goal is to make sure that you can use your phone on our network at all times without any troubles. Do you have any issues with calls or any other services on our network? If so, can you please let me know what is going on & what Zip Code(s) you experience problems in? What has you thinking that you may need to use wifi calling?
