Had same problem starting Feb 2018.  From a Google search found out AOL made some changes, but has lousy customer service and still hasn't fixed issue.  Solution above works, but ONLY if your user name is the same as your account name, which must be your FULL email address for verizon email customers who Verizon abandoned to AOL.  (user@verizon.net).  However to update user name you have to delete your account then add.   Be careful, I read somewhere that this might delete all your contacts and saved emails that are on your phone.  I just downloaded all my contacts to a csv file on my laptop just in case.  I have 2 AOL verizon.net accounts and used the above solution to resolve my email problem with my secondary account.  Will do my primary account tomorrow.  FYI found good info here:   https://forums.androidcentral.com/ask-question/871321-how-do-i-fix-cannot-safely-connect-server-when...
