My S5 phone still says I don't have enough space for an update or Apps. How do I utilize this added memory?

I have  Galaxy 5 with an 8G card and 32G additional. Goes without saying that a few (~5) apps have filled the card. I've moved pics and downloads to the SD card. Good idea to remove trash in email, but will take a lot of trash to make room for one more app.

Can an app be loaded and run in the SD card, or is this external memory (pics, music, etc)?

It appears that I need a larger phone card - don't think I can do this myself. Seems like an ideal time for the Verizon store to offer an upgrade.

JeffWB,

Thank you for checking in with us on this. We know managing storage space is very important. While most older devices do not have that option, some of the newer phones do. Usually, apps can not be placed on a memory card, because they have poorer performance, and developers want their apps to perform well on the main memory. If you are considering a new phone and would like to know if you can force the apps onto a storage card, you can check for the option "Force Allow Apps on External" under Developer options in that phone's settinigs. I hope this helps!

I've read in other postings that apps need to run in phone memory, not external SD memory. Is this a limitation of the phone or the phone card? If the latter, can I purchase a 32G SD with phone-specific cellular software (?).

Phone shows:

   Applications  3.22GB

   Pictures, vid  800KB

   Audio             8Kb

   Downloads     5.3MB

   Cached data   26.5MB

   Miscellaneous files   4.38GB

   Available space  376MB

Miscellaneous files shows only few files taking MB of memory. Something hiding here? I've rebooted phone several times.

   Updated release  --.apk     11.7MB

    .Hnc                                    9MB

   .facebook_cache                 340KB

Using a PC to look at the phone card, the top level shows "355MB free of 3.62GB". (Doh, I thought this was an 8G card). Down one level, there are several levels of empty directories. Using 'properties' for each directory (Windows, sigh), I found total memory used. Here are directories with files:

'Android' uses 6.68MB

'Download' uses 5.3MB

'Notifications'   3.34K

'Sounds'     213KB

There is an update-release file using 12MB

This totals less than 30MB. That leaves 3.6GB of files hiding somewhere. This doesn't look right.

Some of the internal memory space is reserved for the OS and isn't user accessible.

Have you ever cleared the cache partition on your S5?

Turn phone off then press and hold Power-home-volume up

When the phone goes into recovery mode use the volume down

button to highlight clear cache partition then press the power button

then use the volume down button to say yes and press power again

Then just reboot the phone after it clears it out. This does not change

any settings or mess with any of the apps you have on your phone.

If you have never cleared this it should give you enough room then.

The partition holds all the old files from updates and other files that are in your phone.

This is different then the cache files that you clear in settings- storage- internal storage

Also you might want to use smart switch or kies they not only backup your phone they can

also update your phone

Samsung Kies

Samsung Smart Switch

If you go to settings-internal storage then go down to explore on the top right hand side with the 3 dots tap that then go to settings. In there you can tap show hidden files and show file extension.

You can get max use from the card by moving apps to it.  I use an app called AppMgrIII.  It identifies apps that can be put on the card and moves them to the card.  If your card is full or close to full, you can backup it up or copy it to your computer, install a larger card, and move the files from the computer to the new card.
