Any ideas on why my phone doesn't receive software updates? I've looked in settings, on "about phone", but there is no place that shows to check for updates. I bought the phone on-line.

The link 'System updates' is below 'About phone' in the System settings.

is it your active phone or an older phone that uses wi-fi only?

Keeping your phone up to date on software is certainly important. We are here to help! To ensure we are on the same page, we do have a couple of questions. On your Samsung device, you can review software details by locating settings > system update > check for system updates. When you complete these steps on your Samsung device, what shows for you? Also, as bearone21 noted, is this a back up phone that only works when connected to Wi-Fi or your primary phone you use daily?

This is my active phone. I am supposed to have 4GLTE service, which I have taken to the Verizon store a couple of times to have it checked out, but it only shows 3G all the time, and my coverage isn't very good.
There is no place that shows "system update". I go to 'settings', 'about phone', but it doesn't have a 'system update setting. The Android version says 6.0.1, and the Android security patch level says October 1, 2016, so this is how I figure something is amiss with this phone.

The user indicates their device hasn't been updated since October 2016 ... hence the issue since the devices have been receiving updates; the latest update was 10/29/18 for both the S7 and S7 Edge:

To the OP: you indicate you bought the phone "on line"; where did you buy it and how long ago? It could be that the phone was 'altered' (and that's about all that can be said on this forum due to the Terms of Service).
