New Voice Mail Count (red bullet) is not showing on icon in new Galaxy A42 5G -- How do i fix it?

The Verizon voice mail icon on my new Galaxy A42 5G phone does not display the red dot with the number of new voice mails so I often do not know I have a new message.  The Notifications are on the list when I pull down the list from the top and if I open voice mail it tells me how many new voice mails I have, but the icon does not alert me like it should.  I had the sales/tech guy at Costco try to get it to work, but he turned out as baffled as I am.   [Note that the red dot appears for missed calls, e-mail, text messages, etc., just not for new voicemail.]  Please help.

[I would have posted this to a Samsung Galaxy "A" series, but Verizon doesn't appear to offer that opportunity.]

OK, since no one seemed to be able to address my seemingly simple question, I talked to a Verizon support agent by phone ... after a 30 minute plus wait on hold.  He suggested going to the Verizon corporate store in the area which is where this problem was solved in a matter of minutes.  For anyone else having a similar problem -- can't believe we are the only ones -- I am posting my own solution.  It is really quite simple.

Apparently Verizon has a NEW voice mail called Visual Voicemail with "basic" included just like old voicemail.  When we got our phones at Costco, they did not set up the Visual Voicemail for us.  [I'll let them know about that.]  It took the agent at the Verizon store about a minute to set up the Visual Voicemail and check it.  He did it on my phone and my wife's.  All is well.

I asked if I could have done that and he said not on the phone itself, but through the App [though he didn't say so, I suppose that might have included from my computer.]  At any rate, this should no be so difficult.  And I can't believe NO ONE on this community forum didn't just tell me this.  Hopefully, my post will save someone the problem and endless frustration.

Thanks.

Billb1111, we know it is important to have the notifications regarding your voicemails. Is this something that just recently began? Have you done any troubleshooting such as restarting the device or clear the cache on your app?

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for your response.  I'm not sure how long this has been going on, not sure if it ever worked, but phone is no more than 2 months old.  Yes, i have restarted the phone, and the tech/sales person at the Verizon booth at Costco has worked on it also.  He tried a number of things, e.g., turning on and off various settings, restarting the phone, etc.  He called the phone and the notifications showed in the notifications bar (after pulling it down from the top as "3 new notifications" [he tried 3 times], but the red dot never appeared on the voicemail icon.  Very annoying and not particularly useful.

I just cleared the cache, restarted the phone, and called it from another phone.  The result is a display of a missed call (red dot), and an additional "new voice mail" in the notifications bar when pulled down from the top, but NO red dot on the voicemail icon.  Still need help.

Thanks,

This is an addition to my just posted reply.  I just left a voice mail on my wife's identical phone (purchased at the same time/place) and her phone also does NOT show the red dot with new voice mail.  The it does buzz when one is left, shows a missed call dot, and the notification bar shows a new e-mail, but NO red dot on the green voice mail icon.

Thanks for any help.

Can you please call your mobile number from your Smartphone. When the message starts tap "#" and input your password. Listen to a few messages and then end the call. Afterwards, reboot your device and then ask someone to leave you a message. This is like a reboot to your voicemail.  Let us know the outcome.

OK, I did all this; without success.  However, I want to be sure I am doing it correctly.

I used my Smartphone/cell phone to call my cell number.  It didn't actually go to my cell, it brought up the call voicemail page (I guess it knew the line was busy).  I pressed call voicemail, it gave me the voicemail intro, enter password them press #.  I tried your suggestion to hit # then the password, but that just reiterated the instructions to enter my password then press # which I did.  I listened to a couple messages...test...and hung up.  Rebooted phone.  Called from my land line to my cell, left a message.  Cell reacted by lighting up and sounding off.  Added missed call dot and a notification bar indication of missed call and new voice mail, but NO red dot on the voice mail icon.

In other words, if I did all that correctly, it did not correct the problem.  Note, at one point it said it was updating my voicemail and to wait, which I did.  When I hit voicemail, it tells me there are "x" new messages and when it was last updated.  BUT still no red dot.

Still need helpl.

Thanks.

Billb1111, I am always getting important messages and I know how important it is to make sure you do not miss any of them.  I personally have the Galaxy S21 Ultra and the voicemail app does not have the number for any unheard messages.  This is how the software is set up.  When it comes to voicemails you should get the icon in your notification bar at the top with the voicemail icon.  Do you get the icon in your notification bar?  -Santo

Hi Customer Support Santo,

[Sorry, I would have replied sooner, but, not unlike my Galaxy A42, this forum doesn't notify me when I get a response.]

Regarding your question, yes, I get an extremely tiny, non-de script icon like a tape, buried in with a bunch of other nearly illegible tine icons.  NOT acceptable.  I get a red bullet for a missed call, for a text, and for an e-mail.  Why wouldn't I get one for the most important thing--a voicemail?  Whose hair-brained idea would that be and how do we get it corrected???

Please give me some guidance; I just discovered I got an important message 48 hours ago.  This is ridiculous.  Again, please give me some guidance.

The forum does send an email whrn there is a reply.  Before you submit your post look in the lower left and there is a box to check that says email me when someone replies.

Thanks acraftylady2.  I see that now but mine is in the upper right above Message Tags.

Still hoping for help with the red bullet on voice mail icon.
