I finally decided to install Nougat. My fears about doing it proved justified. The install wouldn't finish. When I checked the system updates setting, I kept getting a message the update was taking place. After two hours and two restarts, the update still wouldn't finish. Finally, I turned the phone off, then on and the update started downloading. When I again checked the System updates setting, it said the update wasn't available. Any ideas?

Wow isn't that a kick in the butt. When you finally try and do it and this happens Guess you were right.
have you tried the
Repair Assistant - Software Upgrade Assistant (Samsung) | Verizon Wireless
or the
Software Update - Software Upgrade Assistant (Samsung) | Verizon Wireless
either one of these should give you a solid connection to make sure that none of the software is losing anything
Good luck and let us know

Yes, it was definitely a kick in the butt. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I found it interesting that when I called Tech Coach, the person I spoke with didn't know about, or refer me to, the upgrade assistant. When I connect the phone to the computer, will the upgrade assistant start on its own or do I need to download something first.

tech coach is very good but sometimes you think you're talking to them & you're actually talking to an uninformed customer service rep.
make sure you hear "tech coach" when they answer.
the assistant will use the network if no wi-fi.

I tried the Software Upgrade Assistant. My laptop didn't recognize the phone. I changed the developer setting USB configuration to 'MTP' and USB debugging to 'on', but still no recognition. Any ideas?

I know when I first went to get the SUA I had a lot of trouble getting it to responded to my phone and computer. Your computer has the latest drivers from Samsung right ? I am trying to find my notes on SUA and how I got it to work right. In the mean time did you try Smart Switch it does the same thing as far as the update.... Samsung Smart Switch App they have the app and the software for mac or windows here.
Also since you have nothing to lose at this point try disabling your mobile data and your wifi at the same time and see if you go to settings-system updates and see if it will work that way The last 3 times I updated my phone that is how I did it. In the mean time I will look for them notes. Good luck and keep us posted

I thought Smart Switch was only for transferring info from one phone to another. I didn't know it could be used for an OS update.
