My upgrade basically caused my phone to be completely unresponsive 80% of the time and the battery drains faster than it can charge (even in Safe Mode). Verizon had me factory reset (as usual). I'm anxious to see if this truly does fix the problem.

The phone stabilized three days after the update. The continuing issues are:
1- Battery drains at a noticeable higher rate.
2- samsung text msg app doesn't notify you when a text msg comes through if the app is open. So, I disabled the app and started using the verizon msg app +. It does give notification and it works well. But, I like the samsung msg app better.
Please keep in mind that I have disabled 29 apps/bloatware because I don't use them, and they simply slow you down more than benefit You.
You have Samsung, Google, and verizon who have collectively stuffed the phone with more junk than we all need.
I don't use the finger sensor, nor the heart rate app. I try to keep a minimum number of apps in my phone. There is so much they can handle. And yes, I cleared the cache partition twice after the download, but I did not do FDR.
Good luck to all.

Give this app from the Play Store a try, Snapdragon™ BatteryGuru . Even without the app your battery will improve in 5 days or less.

That app works like a dream. I use it. It has helped quite a bit with the new update. It takes 2 days to learn your habits for charging and stuff like that, but it can help limit app data requests, it can remind you when to charge or if you will make it without a charge. It works like a charm....

Do you happen to have Facebook and/or Facebook Messenger installed? If so try uninstalling them for a few days and see if battery life improves. Elsewhere online people have found those to be problems with Lollipop on S5. I experienced a similar problem on an older Android with a system update and Facebook.

Why would you have to uninstall apps though? Isn't the smartphone supposed to be smart? Why should you have to run barebones just to get bare minimum out of your battery....by the time its all said and done why dont we all just go back to Blackberry? Playing the see which app is the problem app is no better than being back on Blackberry with no real app store and no decent apps....I mean cmon, either the phone updates need to stop breaking the OS and draining the battery or the people making the apps need to stay on top of the update game....

It is a problem with the apps themselves that is causing the battery drain, something changed in the operating system and whatever those apps are doing (or were doing) now is causing problems. Most often is it something the app(s) are doing causing what is called a wakelock. When a wakelock occurs it prevents the phone from going into a deep sleep and causes excess battery usage. I have had the issue specifically with facebook before and I am seeing others on the web solving Lollipop/S5 issues by removing facebook/facebook messenger. If it doesn't fix the problem then reinstall and try to find out what app(s) are causing the problems. You can always access facebook using your web browser if needed while testing. I have even had a Plantronics headset that I had to disable features on because the software that had worked under an earlier Android version no longer worked under a newer version and it would drain the battery in 8 hours. To this day Plantronics still hasn't bothered to fix the problem, their solution is to disable the feature and when people complain they just say their engineers are looking at the problem (even though it has been 2 years now).
