Several software updates ago, my text notification will not chime if I am in the text thread. I must back out of the thread in order to get a notification. Is there a fix for this?

When I got my Samsung S4, the text notification worked fine.  Then there was an update and ever since then, my text notification will  not chime if I am parked in the thread.  So, for example, I send a text and put the phone down.  The person responds, but I don't get a audible notification.  If I send the text and then back out of the thread, 1 step, I will get a notification.  Is there a fix for this?
