Have you rooted your device?
Have you updated your software to the latest available?
You should try to install the Software Repair Assistant to resolve this issue too.

No but after the last update is when this started happening so I'm wondering if it could be linked to the problem

It is very possible. However, a lot of things that we start to notice different are actually brought to our attention by security patches by Google. So it could be that your device is actually in danger. I would suggest installing the SUA program for Windows. You can most likely resolve this issue on your own and efficiently.
