Unread Messages Missing

I updated to Oreo on my S8plus yesterday and now my messages and email app icon badges show the number of unread notifications - not unread messages. Once I open the text message or email apps, the app icon badge clears out even though I still have unread text and/or email messages. I need my app icon badges to tell me when I have unread messages to view. I've already missed an important text message. Thanks!

SUSIE_FRD, making sure you receive all of your app notifications is a priority. Allow us to further investigate the details. Can you please let us know which text and email app you are currently using (preloaded, VZW messages, 3rd party, Gmail, preloaded email app)? Also, just to clarify, are you not receiving any app notifications for all the new messages (email and or text) that you received? Or does the app notification disappear even though you have old content that has not yet been read/opened?

Hi Sylvia,

Thanks for your reply. I am using the preloaded Samsung stock email and messaging apps on my S8+. My email app is connected to my personal hotmail.com account.

I do see an app icon badge that tells me the number of new email or text message notifications I received since I last opened the app. I can long press on the app icon and see a VERY brief notification message. However, the information displayed is so limited in scope that it's often difficult to figure out what's in the message without opening the app. Once I open the app the number on the app icon badge (number of unread notifications) disappears even though I have old content that has not yet been read or opened. In other words, my email and text messages app icon badges now shows the number of recent notifications but no longer shows the number of unread messages. The number of unread messages is so much more useful to me than new notifications. Can you help me get the  unread message counter back?

SUSIE_FRD, a software update can feel as though you’re receiving a new phone. This means some functions like the message notifications can change. Are you able to duplicate this issue when using the Verizon Messaging + application?

This thread may help to explain what other users have also commented on: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/badge-notifications-oreo-t3757354

Bottom line it does appear this was simply a functional change with the Oreo update. Some folks recommend TeslaUnread app but I would suggest reading the reviews first: TeslaUnread for Nova Launcher - Apps on Google Play

I would commenting on the Samsung & Google message boards to let both companies know your not happy with this change. From what we can tell in the Samsung thread below it was a concept change with Google's Android in Android Oreo.

Thank you bd94s10 for your excellent reply! The links you included were most helpful!

It does appear I am stuck with the lousy notification icon badge functionality that Oreo thrust on us. I will defintely get on Samsung and Google's message boards and complain about this. Hoping if enough people complain about losing functionality we depend on to make our phones useful, MAYBE they will fix it. After the Oreo update, I feel that I can't count on my phone to tell me I have important messages I might have missed. This is unacceptable!

Thanks again for your reply bd94s10! I am grateful!

Thank you for your feedback and suggestions, bd94s10. We don't want you to worry about not being able to count on your phone, SUSIE_FRD. I appreciate you taking the time to bring this to our attention, so we can also submit feedback to the manufacturer. Have you been able to test a different app so you can feel confident about not missing any notifications?

I'm having the same issue on a Google Pixel 2XL since the last Android 9 update. I'm using VZ messaging app so please don't tell me it's a Google issue. Usually the notifications disappear once I look at all other notification on my lock screen, but last night I heard a text come in, and this morning had zero text notifications. I opened the app as sure enough there were multiple unread texts!

Please let me know the fix for this as I'm already hating this expensive thing, if you can't make a simple text work I don't see how you can charge me for "service" that doesn't work.

We don't want you to hate your device, Mariebee, we want you to have a reliable device that you enjoy using. Have you attempted to follow the steps in the thread? If so, were they successful?
