Voicemail does not update unless I turn off the wifi and refresh

For 1 1/2 years now, every time someone leaves a voice mail I get a message that something went wrong with my visual voicemail (VM). The only way to retrieve the left VM is to turn off my wifi, then go to my VM app and hit refresh. I called Verizon customer support, and after they couldn't fix the issue, got told that I will just have to deal with it like this. I have been a customer with Verizon for over 15 years and never had problems like this before. My phone, which is a Samsung Galaxy Ultra s20, is not that old and shouldn't be having problems like this. Maybe it is time to change phone companies.
