We understand your concern to get your voicemail notifications working. What kind of phone do you have? Are any other noticitaions not appearing in the home screen? Have you tried any troubleshooting with your device so far?

I have a Galaxy S8 and have looked at and turned on notifications in every conceivable category. I do get notifications at the top of the screen for other things, but not email. I get numbers on the What's App shortcut as well. But I get nothing at all for Voicemail unless I open the app.

That number which sits on the main VM icon will not show up unless you have data turned on.

By "data" do you mean using a cell-tower connection as opposed to wi-fi? Please clarify.

Wyoaussie1, we definitely want to make sure that this can get resolved for you to use your voicemail. Are you able to dial your own number or *86 to call your voicemail to see if a notification appears? JoseL_VZW

Yes, turn data on by pulling down your notifications bar and tapping on data to turn it on.
