Under edit on individual contacts there is an option to assign a message tone right under the option to assign a ring tone. My assigned ring tones work but the message tones always default to the last one I assigned as an individual.

In your post subject you say assign message tones to contacts. Are you in fact wanting to assign individual ringtones for when a contact calls or a message tones for when they text message? If the latter, and if you're using the Messages+ app, the tone needs to be assigned within the Messages app itself. Open Messages, click on a contacts conversation, upper right corner click the menu. On the menu, click Customize. Scroll down to where it says Tones, then select the tone you wish to assign to that contact.

I messed with my S8+ some after reading your post. At first I experienced what you did however I had my wife's number saved a couple of different times in my contacts. I made sure I deleted her number via other contacts (I need to do a mass clean-up of my contacts) and after I did so the sound worked correctly. I changed it for her and for a buddy of mine. Each person text me and it worked as I would have expected.. the sound play correct. Did you save the change you made after you selected the message tone? I figure you did but wanted to ask.
The only thing I can say is make sure you don't have that number saved twice by accident like I did. Let me know if I'm missing your point in terms of your challenge.

Thank you for your suggestions. I did save them and I don't see any duplicates in my contacts. I tried reassigning the tones for 4 people and it just keeps saving the last tone I select for someone as the default for everything. I see a trip to the Verizon store in my future!

I would do a chat with Samsung on their website. Also, if you have a Best Buy location near you it may have Samsung reps present to help. I'll mess with mine some more but it seemed to work for me. I'll try it a bit more today assigning different tones to different contacts.

Skchenault54, identifying those favorite callers is something many of us like to do. Let's ensure that you can too. For this device you would Tap the Contact you want to edit > Details > Edit > View More (at the bottom of the page above SCAN BUSINESS CARD) and you will see the option for Ringtone or Message Tone.

That is exactly what I did. However, the last tone I assign ends up being my default tone for everything and everyone.

Thank you for checking those settings for us. You’ve been through so much with the ringtones already skchenault54. Do you notice if the contacts are saved with Verizon Cloud and not Google? If the contacts are saved with the Cloud, please change one to the Google option and test the message tone. You can change this within the contact’s Edit option.

Thank you, Chris! The Samsung support line thought if I deleted the cache it would work but before I tried that I read your suggestion and that worked!
