no sound notification of text

Last night my phone was working fine . this morning i noticed there was no notification sound with my texts. I missed so many of them. How can i fix this? Also the left button on the side , up until today , was to control my volume, now it makes my font smaller or larger.  how can i control my volume without having to go into my settings.

Does the volume buttons work normally when you are at the home screen and not in an application?

Hmmm that's strange Mick34! Allow us to help get your phone working properly. Have you tried resetting your phoen by simply removing the battery and reinserting it back to the phone?Also, what software version do you have on your phone?
