If you were not the account owner of the shared account with your ex or soon to be ex, then your line has to be de-linked from the shared account before you can take control of it, which requires approval from the account owner in most cases. It sounds like Verizon did not separate your line properly from the shared account. Or else your ex isn't letting your line go as a means to control you. Consent from the account owner to de-link a line from a shared account is not required in domestic violence situations, but I've read some conflicting information about this in the forums before.
I'm not a Verizon employee, just another customer trying to help.
