Whenever I want to have my phone connect to my blue tooth headset so I can talk on the phone via my BT device, I have to go through the following sequence:
1.) From the Home screen, select Menu | Notifications and then press the Bluetooth icon which will light up.
2.) From the Home screen, select Menu | Settings | Wireless & networks | Bluetooth settings then select the desired blue tooth device and it will connect.
There must be some easier steps to get my phone to connect to my bluetooth headset. My old phone, that was not even a smart phone, would automatically detect the presence of an active bluetooth device, all I had to do is have the BT device turned on.

After turning on the bluetooth on your phone, just turn on the device you wish to use and they should auto connect (as long as the device is in your paired history). To make the process even quicker, just drag down the power control widget from your notification bar to turn on BT.
I keep my BT on all the time. My phone automatically detects and connects to paired devices.
In fact, I have BT, WIFI and GPS on all the time. It hardly affects my battery and my phone lasts me through the day with moderate usage. I do perform a full recharge every night.

I am having a problem with my Iphone 4 connecting to the blu tooth device in my car. I have to power off the phone and restart it before I get a connection. Every now and then my phone will connect with the car but usually I have to power down and then up.
