Can't respond to messages sent using 5 digit codes

I'm having an issue with responding to any message that is sent to me from a 5 digit code instead of a actual phone number, i.e. any message sent from a doctors office which requires me to respond by typing the word CONFIRM or CANCEL. Does anyone know why this is suddenly happening?
