Charged for a Returned Phone

I upgraded two phones to a Google Pixel.  One of the phones was defective, so I returned it.  I saw on the next bill they still charged me $500 for the phone. Thankfully I kept the receipt, so I called Verizon and provided the tracking #. They sent me an email saying  they would remove the charges. The next bill came and the charges were still on there.  On my bill due date, they took that $$ out of my checking account. I AM LIVID!  Online support was no help, they want to credit.  NO I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!  I looked on this community and this has happened to many others - if you were able to get this taken care of, please let me know how.  I am also contacting  my attorney general.
