Fascinate Updates?

I have a fascinate and I got one update on it and now I can't get any other updates.  It keeps telling me that my server is unavailable every time.  I called verizon and went in and nothing was change and I called samsung and went on their website and nothing.  Why can't I get updates?

In order to correct this, you'll need to have a Verizon employee go into your account and deactivate your phone. And then reactivate it. You'll have access to updates when the deactivation/reactivation process is complete.

Hi Vernie32909,

Have you been able to get the ED05 update yet? Below are the steps, in case you need them.

Select Menu

Select Settings

Select About Phone (have to scroll down)

Select Check for Updates

If you have not yet called in to Customer Service and are still having this issue, please send me a PM with your contact information and I will reach out to you personally to resolve.

Additionally, you are able to go to http://www.verizonwireless.com/support and use the keywords "Fascinate update." You will then click on "Software Update: Fascinate Update." This will provide you with the steps, as well as the benefits of the upgrade.

I hope this information is helpful and addresses your concerns with the update on the Samsung Fascinate. Have a great day!

Thank you!

Too bad, Verizon will not allow users to d/l the updates via their website versus OTA, I am sure several issues could be resolved via d/l from the Verizon server

I spoke with technical services because my Fascinate drops calls, loses texts, and generally operates poorly and I wanted a replacement. Verizon couldn't replace the phone because they couldn't verify the problems I was having. After going through a bunch of tests on the phone while I was on a land line talking to Verizon the technician finally decided to wipe everything out of it and start over. She then told me that I had to disconnect the update feature and not let the phone update its system software because that was what was causing the problems. She also told me that I must remove the battery every day and re-install it, and update the phone by dialing *228 and updating both 1 & 2, at least once every week. I found this to be a rediculous answer and have continued having problems including "all circuits are busy try your call again later", dropped calls, missing text messages from friends that have shown me on their phones (on a different provider) that they did actually send me those message and my phone didn't recieve them. Is this a case of the Ford Pinto? Does Verizon know these phones have serious issues but are unwilling to bear the expense of replacing them and hoping we will all get so frustrated we will upgrade them to something else? I know two other people who have the same phone I do and have exactly the same problems and been given the same "technical" advice and we live in completely different areas so its not tower reception. Verizon would please just admit, openly, that these phones need to be upgraded at Samsung's expense? When my son upgraded his phone and wanted a Fascinate, strangely, they had none in stock anymore.....makes a person start to wonder.

Hi ChristinaB_VZW - when I follow you procedure for getting the Update, I get ED04, not ED05.  How do we make sure to get the latest update?

Will ED05 solve all the issues reported for ED04?

Thanks.

The ED05 update is supposed to fix the issues that ED04 caused, but there is mixed reactions out there about that. Some it fixed, others it did not....

Why is this marked "Solved"?  There is no way the so-called "solution" could even be done, since Fascinate owners experiencing this problem (the thousands and thousands of us) can not get past the "Server is Unavailable".  It is impossible to do a manual update. This all began back when the Froyo 2.2 update was pushed out.  Everyone (like me) with Fascinates that couldn't get the update (and still haven't to this date) were just out of luck.  Back then, I read dozens and dozens of posts at many websites (including this one) from unhappy owners who had tried everything to get the problem resolved.

People tried calling Verizon's technical support, going in to their local Verizon stores, and even reaching out to Samsung tech support.  Many people spent countless hours on the phone with support personal who either knew nothing about this "Server is Unavailable" / inability to get the 2.2 update problem or, at least, weren't admitting that they knew anything about it.

Regardless of whether Fascinate owners began with tech support over the phone or went in to their local Verizon store, the end result was always the same.  After Verizon personnel tried many different things, in the end they had to do a factory reset.  Every person who had been forced to do this said that, although Verizon promised, before doing that, that they had backed up everything to the phone's SIM card, after doing the factory reset, everything (or if they were lucky, only almost everything) was lost.  Contacts, apps, calendar info (because of the defect in the phone's setup for calendar not utilitzing the Google calendar), etc., were all lost.  "Oops"...says Verizon.

In other posts I read last year, people with this update problem who had been offered, by Verizon, a refurbished Fascinate for $99.  Like me, that did not seem reasonable at all since the phone itself was brand new a short time earlier when we purchased it and now we were being asked to settle for a used phone?  That was not acceptable...not at all acceptable.

Prior to switching to Verizon and buying this Samsung Fascinate, my husband and I were with AT&T for 6 1/2 years (and we did not upgrade our Motorola phone one time in that 6 1/2 years -- no need to -- it worked fine).  We didn't have any problems with AT&T, but we decided to switch to Verizon because Verizon's TV commercials made us believe they had better coverage that AT&T, and because our daughter (a Verizon customer) wanted us to switch so phone calls to & from us would come out of her Verizon Friends & Family minutes.

What a mistake.  We are counting down the months until our 2-year contract with Verizon is up and we can go back to AT&T.  The release of the latest update (2.3 Gingerbread) to Samsung Fascinate owners is what has got me riled up again.  It infuriates me that I am still having to operate off the pitiful 2.1.  So many problems with it.  But until I figure out how to back up all my apps, data, calendar info, and contacts (which are an absolute mess because the Verizon employee who transferred them from my Motorola phone to my Fascinate back when I bought it, said the best she could do was to have half of them on the "Phone" contacts and other half on "Google" contacts) to my computer, I am not going to let anyone do a factory reset.  I am not about to allow Verizon to give me the "oh, we'll save everything to your SIM card" line.

TO YOU VERIZON EMPLOYEES who post possible solutions on these forums, DO NOT MARK THEM SOLVED UNTIL THE ORIGINAL POSTER TELLS YOU THEIR PROBLEMS IS RESOLVED.  And, please, is it too much to ask to read the original poster's question carefully so that you don't provide answers that aren't even possible to do?

CaJa - I would keep trying to get the ED05 update.  It is there.  And you will find it a vast imporvement over ED04.  While I still have screen freezes now and again, I have not had dropped or missed calls, text messages etc.  The ED05 update does clean up most of the issues.

I would stick with it.

And before you ask, I've been a VZW customer since 1995 (when they were Bell Atlantic).  Admittedly, there have been moments where I have hated them, but they have stepped up for me when it counts.
