Gmail LED notification not working

I recently switched from Galaxy S3 to S7. Right out of the box it went through a s/w upgrade to Nougat.

I find that if I select "Silent" as the option for sound notification of incoming gmail, it turns off the LED blinking feature as well. Is there some setting I can use to keep the sound to "Silent" yet have the blinking LED notification for new incoming mail in Gmail? I could do this in S3 where I only had a blinking LED notification for all incoming Gmail.

Thank you

I was wondering if you were able to get the issue resolved. So far no luck for me. Been thinking is a factory reset might be helpful in this case - Any thoughts? Thanks

Unfortunately, it's still the same for me. I had hoped that Android would

issue updates and patches that would fix it, but nothing yet.

I've thought about the factory reset as well. I just haven't been able to

motivate myself to do it.

We canโ€™t have this LED not working any longer, so letโ€™s jump in and try a few steps. First, please ensure the phone has been powered off and back on. If the issue still continues, please turn on Safe Mode. This will temporary disable the 3rd party apps to see if itโ€™s affecting it. Hereโ€™s a link to help turn on safe mode http://vz.to/2ehwPcr

I completely agree with chanefeld. The issue is that LED notification does not work when the app notification is set to silent. For me it is not just limited to Gmail, but some other apps as well (e.g. K9, Whatsapp).

the issue is a combination of Android nougat update on S7

I'm having the same issue with Gmail as well after Nougat. It's very annoying - I want to have notifications on vibrate, but I don't want my phone to vibrate for every email in Gmail. The frustrating part is that Gmail has a vibrate only/silent option within the app, but the notifications appeared to be tied to the system notifications, so you can't have the phone set to vibrate, but exclude Gmail, unless you mute it completely in the system settings. This was not an issue with prior releases of Android.

If anyone is still having this issue, give this a try. Go to Google, and do a search for a silent notification. Download that, and set it as your notification. You aren't putting GMail on silent mode, but you will have a silent notification sound. I get the flashing LED now, without any sound.

Thanks.  Can you be more specific as to what it is you downloaded or what site you downloaded it from?  When I do a Google search for "silent notification" I get too many hits to know which search result you recommend that I select.

Just click on the download icon after you go to that page.

Thanks.  That's a genius workaround.  One problem: after I download the silent ringtone, I can add it to my list of telephone ringtones, but I can't figure out how to add it to the list of available ringtones for the Gmail app.

You have to put the silent ringtone in the Notification folder for it to show as a notification for Gmail. Go to My Files, Internal Storage, then Download. Find the ringtone, and long press it. Then click on the 3 dots in the top right, and choose "move". Then select internal storage, then Notifications. Click on Done, and it will move it to Notifications.

For anyone following this thread, LenniePaz's solution works perfectly.  I did have to download a file manager app because Nougat wouldn't let me move the downloaded silent ringtone to the Notifications folder.  But once I was able to move it, the led flash returned with no audible alert.

I'm assuming you have an S7 Edge, correct? If that's the case, you do not need a file manager app to move the notification in Nougat. When you open "My Files", there's a section called "Categories". I think you opened Downloads in that section. You can't move files in that section. You have to open the Downloads folder in the Internal Storage section of My Files. You can 100% move files from that folder.
