Gyro quit working after marshmallow update

My auto-rotate and compass quit working after I performed a system update. I downloaded a bubble level and it does the same thing.

I am at version 6.0.1

I can soft boot the phone and the auto-rotate, compass and bubble level will work for a couple of hours and stop.

I appreciate any input on this issue.

What is the phone model you have?

I'm most definitely NOT a VZW employee. If a post answered your question, please mark it as the answer.

sjohn80166, a phone that acts up is certainly a nuisance. At the very worst the fix may involve a factory reset, however we want to avoid this if we can. For starters after an update, temporary files linger, so weโ€™d like to perform a wipe cache partition. No important files are erased, as this is similar to clearing the cookies on the computer when it acts up.
Note: The following link states the Note 10.1 at the top. These are the same steps for the S5.

sjohn80166,
We definitely want to make sure that you can use all your applications after the update. We appreciate some of the troubleshooting you have already completed. Is the application you are working with up date? Have you tried deleting the application and reinstalling it? I have uninstalled all of the applications that were installed after this issue started happening. Did not correct the issue.

I performed the "wipe cache partition" per the Verizon instructions. The gyro started working correctly again but only for a few hours. Same results as if performing a soft boot.

Now it is back to the same state as before. No auto rotate, compass doesn't work, bubble level doesn't work.

Nothing that uses the gyroscope will work unless I perform a soft boot. And then it will only work for a few hours.

Updates should enhance your phone not cause issues, sjohn80166. Let's look at a couple of other steps to proceed. Please complete a factory reset on your phone. Before doing this please also complete a back up to make sure none of your important files are lost. Here are the steps to complete http://vz.to/2cqFMOO.

sjohn80166, having a working phone is a must. We'll get this figured out together. Please run a device health check on the phone through the My Verizon mobile app. Here's how http://vz.to/29xFfGS. Please test the device in Safe Mode http://vz.to/2cksMqH and let us know how it works.

I tried the above request to reboot in safe mode ran a device check. No issues were found.

The gyro only worked for about an hour then quit again.

I was really hoping to resolve this issue without having to do a factory reset.

But it appears this is going to be my only other option to try.

sjohn80166,

We appreciate your continued efforts in troubleshooting this. It's very strange that the factory reset did not resolve this for you. After the reset, did you test the device without restoring any content(email, apps etc.)? If so, since your trouble began after a software update, we'd like to recommend that you try repairing the software using the Software Repair Tool. Here's how http://vz.to/1Uc3A3e
