does anyone know how to transfer text messages from phone to the computer. I want to save my messages before deleting them from my phone. I looked thru the manuel and couldn't find how to do it. The verizon store wasn't helpful at all.

When you say that they weren't helpful, does that mean that they didn't know how to do it or that they said it couldn't be done?
There is no easy way to do this for free. You can forward each individual text that you want to save via email and save them that way on the computer. You can also use a messaging app from the market and back them up that way. You will have to pay for this, though. I use Handcent and it works quite well.
You can use SMS Backup & Restore
