How do I set my device to only get give notification sounds when I get a text?

took my phone to verizzon store where i bought phone.When i get a text i get no notofication. Tech at store said everything was working and gave me Tech 800 number. Not Pleased. If he couldn't find anything why did he give me Tech number???? He needs to do his job or not work there. I am not PLEASED with this phone or tech support i have gotten.I remember why i left verizon

Make sure mobile data is turned on.
