Importing Contacts from Gmail onto the local groups

My gmail contacts show up under contacts as a google group.  how do I import those contacts onto the phone so I can assign them to groups.

Open your contacts application Make sure All contacts are visible, unless you only want to back up certain groups. Hit the menu button Hit the Import/Export button

You have to EXPORT all contacts in your list to your SD Card, then IMPORT them back to your contact list as "Phone" not "Google." From there, you can customize your contacts with ringtones, notes, and add to groups.

 

Beware though: if you were to delete the Google contacts on your phone after this export/import, this will delete all contacts in your Gmail account. So be careful.
