May Ethernet tethering last for more than 2 minutes? USB tethering does, though.

tldr; The Ethernet tethering connection ends within minutes, with or without an Ethernet switch. The host phone is a Samsung S22 Ultra. USB tethering worked for hours on a laptop.

Account info: I brought my own Samsung S22 Ultra to the network (Verizon, from Xfinity) and the phone has access to the 5G Ultra Wideband via its current subscription. I did not run over the data limit (7GB out of 30 + 100 GB).

Problem: With Mobile spot turned off, as I plug a USB-C hub with power and Ethernet connection to the phone, I get to turn on "Ethernet tethering". The other end of the Ethernet cable goes to a switch, which is connected to a laptop and a router. Two observations under this setup:
1. Within the first minute or two (up to 100 ping sequence), I was having internet connection over the ethernet port;
2. Then, with nothing changed on the phone, there is no more internet connection over the Ethernet connection, both on the phone and on the router.

Question: Were other folks able to establish reliable Ethernet connection over the phone? If so, I'd spend another hour troubleshooting (or, actively waiting) with the tech-support line. The goal is to get both a router and few other desktop/laptop computers to connect to the Internet, with or without the Ethernet switch. I included the Ethernet switch mainly for testing, as the router does have few more spare ports.

Why all these hassle? Well, I'm going through internet outage both at home and work, with no information about when will the internet connection get back. I tried a few co-work spaces, but none has a standing desk in my surrounding areas.

Answering my original question:

  • Per a later call with a knowledgeable lady via the support line, I was told that Verizon won't disconnect Ethernet tethering connections.
  •  My issue with Ethernet tethering mainly has to do with the adapter I used. It was from 2018 or so, before USB-C was widely used on mobile devices.

Fix: a new USB-C to Ethernet adapter (with PD input for power) does the job.
