Music/rhapsody download question

Hi,

Is purchasing music via Vcast the only way to download music on the Fascinate?  I have a Rhapsody account and there are some tunes that I have purchased.  Is there another way to download those tunes and play them on the music player?

Thanks.

Vcast is not needed to download music to your Fascinate.  Any digital music that you have purchased or ripped from CDs can be loaded onto your phone.  You'll can use the AllShare app to load the music wirelessly or mount the Fascinate via USB.  If you use USB, then you will simply drag and drop the files into a folder on the Fascinate.  I created one called "Music".

If you have a Rhapsody to Go account, you can load the Rhapsody app and play any music in the Rhapsody library.  This isn't downloading but it does allow you to listen to their entire library without purchasing indivual songs.  I was getting nickled and dimed on iTunes with my kids and Rhapsody limits the costs to a set amount each month.

I am using iTunes on my workstation in my house, and using iSyncr and iSyncr Wifi to do the sync wirelessly to my device. It sends the music and playlists to my device at a certain predefined time. It works great, but it is a paid app, but really cheap, it was $2.99 for the main app, and $.99 for the Wifi portion.

I have Rhapsody installed on my PC, and that's how I was getting my music onto the Fascinate previously. Now all of the tracks have expired and they need to contact the servers again to renew themselves, but when I tried to do it with the Rhapsody app from the phone, it told me the phone wasn't authorized for playback because the laptop was, and you're only allowed one playback device.

Unfortunately, thanks to EA28, syncing from the Rhapsody program on the PC is still borked, and when I use VCast (which is totally useless, IMHO), the tracks still throw up a DRM error when I attempt to play them from the phone.

Since I have more than enough music on my PC already, I've just been dropping and dragging folders directly to the SD card and making up my playlists in Mixzing. But I absolutely refuse to use VCast. You can make any playlist you want in VCast, but if you sync it to the phone, it never shows up. And then because it creates a separate folder for EVERY file, it's a cumbersome nightmare trying to make the playlist on the phone because even though the tracks are the same compilation album, you can't select it all at once because they're different artists.

If it weren't for the fact that they're ridiculously expensive, I'd get another iTouch and go back to that.

Like I said, if they are MP3's, I would installiTunes, create playlists there, and then purchase iSyncr PC (or MAC) and iSyncr Wifi (If you have wireless at your house) to sync them. It works great, and sync's the playlist along with the music to your Fascinate.

Best purchase I have made thus far.

The laptop shouldn't count as one of your devices.  You authorize a computer (the laptop) and manage devices (Fascinate, iTouch, etc) in Rhapsody.  Open up the Rhapsody app (not website) on your LAPTOP and select My Account_Manage My Devices.  You'll have to sign in to confirm that the Fascinate is listed as your portable device.  If that is correct, again select  My Account_Update Track Licenses.   See if that helps.

This thread seems to be going in a couple of directions.  For MP3s, I think we can agree there are a lot of solutions other than Verizon's to loading music on your Fascinate.

For Rhapsody to Go subscribers, the solution is different.   With this service, you're not actually purchasing the music - It is closer to renting songs in 30 day increments.  As long as you subscribe, you can download all of Rhapsody's library.  The only limitation is bandwith and storage space.  Stop paying, and the ability to listen to all of that music ends in 30 days.

Without debating if that's better or worse than iTunes, the important thing here is making sure your device (e.g. the Fascinate) is registered with Rhapsody, and that the DRM is properly assigned to the tracks on the device.  Depending on your subscription, you can have 1-3 devices registered with Rhapsody.  In my case, my three kids have iPod Touches that take up all of my device slots.  I can't add my Fascinate unless I drop one of the the iPods.

Once a device is registered with Rhapsody, the application checks your subscription status and DRM.  If both of these are OK, the music will play.   Occasionally, the DRM can get warped and you will have to reapply the DRM to the tracks on your Fascinate.  I reapply them using the Rhapsody application on my computer, not on my device.  For Mac or Linux users, you are on your own - I am not sure how this is done.
