My fix to bad battery life Marshmallow Note 4

I thought that I would share my experience with all.  First thing is that Marshmallow is a problematic update.

I had bought a new battery from Amazon back in May because I was getting less life after the Lollipop update.  I will own my phone two years at the end of October.  After all, a prime benefit of this phone is that it has a replaceable battery.

I was plagued by random restarts and very bad battery life after Marshmallow.  I factory reset the phone and went into safe mode, per the Verizon CS.  I still had the random restarts and they shipped me a new phone.  Guess what, I rebuilt the new phone and still had problems with the battery.  Turns out that the battery, which I bought on Amazon was either some counterfeit or the Amazon seller had shipped me a "recycled" battery.  It was a battery problem and did not the refurb phone.

  1. I recommend buying a verified Samsung battery.  I got mine at Staples, which included a spare charger for $37.  Do not buy the $10 batteries on Amazon or elsewhere as they will be absolute junk.  Bestbuy has them.  Be careful where you buy.  It seems like Samsung has made them scarce, because they want us to upgrade.  They list at $30, if you can find them.
  2. In the meantime, after you load Marshmallow and you are having problems, you should clean the application cache, which is Settings- Storage.  Press Internal Storage and hold Cached Data and pick the clear option. Settings > Storage and USB > Cached data > OK. You may have to reload some passwords.
  3. Clean the System Cache.  Be careful here not to do a factory reset.  I took this from Android Marshmallow problems and how to fix them - AndroidPIT.  To clear the system cache, turn your phone or tablet off and then press Power and Volume Down until you see the Fastboot menu. Use the volume buttons to highlight Recovery and press the Power button to select it. If you see the robot on its back, hold Power and press Volume Up once to access the recovery menu. Use the volume buttons to select Wipe cache partition and press Power to confirm. Once you've wiped the system cache, you can reboot and your battery drain problem should be solved.
  4. Disable all of those junk apps that Verizon gives you, such as NFL, Google Books, Google Play Games, etc.  The Samsung rep at Best Buy told me to disable DTIgnite.  This is the application that lets Verizon load crapware on your phone and it polls all day long.   Also, I found that disabling Samsung health also helped, but I may put it back as I do more testing.

With the brand new "real" battery, I am back to about two days.  With my original battery, I was just making it to the end of the day.  In the past I was able to run location all the time, but I am now turning it off until needed.  You may also want to use some of the automation tools, such as Automate, MacroDroid, or Automate to switch off wireless, etc as you travel around.

I hope that this helps.

I am experiencing the same battery issue as you have listed, and purchased the new Samsung battery from Amazon for $9 which is worthless.  I will look for a different battery at Staples.  How do you know if it's a valid Samsung battery?
