No emails no matter app

I apologize in advance. I'm asking these questions on behalf of my 68 year old uncle who is relaying info to my mom in another household.

What I know:

Uncle has an Samsung Android with Verizon. He claims after an upgrade/change by Verizon he is no longer receiving any emails unless he sends them to himself from his work email. But claims his phone has zero connection to his work email/user name/password.

He recently created a Gmail account and is using the Gmail app as a test. Same result, receives emails from his own work email but no one else.

My mom has tried sending emails and 99% don't arrive. Every once in awhile one will arrive.

Checked junk/spam/other folders.

He also claims he has email sync on.

What am I missing? His phone doesn't know his work email so how could it be the only one it's receiving?

I'm thinking something is lost in translation or being misunderstood. Doesn't make sense to me.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
