Phone Locks Up When Using Google Maps App

Kind of a strange issue.  I'll have Google Maps up and running.  The past few uses I run about 15 mins when the map goes to thumbnail size and a Google homescreen comes up.  The screen locks and only a restart gets things going again.

Anyone else experience the issue that can give me ideas on how to fix the problem?

That would get old fast. We want to make sure you can fully count on your navigation. That's a big deal. We'll be glad to help. Are any other apps on your device having similar issues? How often does this happen? Can you think of any changes to your device or this app around the time this began?
