Phone's Number pad becomes unresponsive during call

I've had several situations where I'm trying to enter a prescription number for example while on the phone with the pharmacies automated attendant, or trying to use the number pad to just respond to the requests, i.e. "Press 1 for x" but nothing happens and nothing seems to work. Can't seem to find a way to make a Paste function work either. Any suggestions?
