Once again I am caught in Verizon support heck. I suspended a phone that was stolen and then tried to reconnect using the "reconnect" icon only to get 1. blank page, 2. Something went wrong, please try later, 3. call support, 4. ha ha - you actually thought we were trying to help silly boy.
Went to the store and they couldn't do anything. Can't activate phone as it won't let me choose my original phone number from drop down list.

Help is right here! We want to do all that we can to resolve this issue. Did you disconnect the wireless line or temporarily suspend the line that you're attempting to activate that phone on?
Did the store representative submit a request to remove that device from our negative list so that we can reactivate that phone?
Did you originally file an insurance claim to have that device replaced by Asurion, the insurance company?

Switched over to Verizon mid November and it’s been nothing but a nightmare! I couldn’t register phone for almost a month! Between phone calls to Verizon and trips to their store I’ve spent 6–8 hours wasting my time. In fact I’m on hold with them for another issue as I type this -so far 1:15 minutes listening to their god awful music.Never again

no big surprise, until the suspended phone is re-activated you won't keep the old number.
i had the best pc chat session ever with verizon tech coach yesterday.
one question answered without being put on hold.

Sounds like you didn't explore all your own mentioned options. My Verizon can be hit or miss and store reps are sales drones.
Activating equipment takes a few minutes from care.
