Samsung Fascinate - Major Disappointment
droidnewbie1976

OK, So I know most people are going to say to go with 4G, but really I live outside of major  cities and it will be years before it is in my area.  We have had BlackBerry curves for the past 2 years....decent phones but we really wanted touch screen & android options with our upgrade.  Thought we did good research and went with the Samsung Fascinate x2 (me and hubby).  We activated them this past Saturday and I have been on the phone with Verizon for hours a day since Sunday!  Our email doesn't come into the phone consistently (except for gmail) with out going into each inbox and manually hitting refresh.  Even then some are taking over 10 hours before coming through to the phone!!!  On top of that the call quality has not been impressive at all.  When talking in his work truck I can not even understand a single work my husband says.  Yes, its a little load but the blackberry handled it fine.  The amount of background noise these things pick up is ridiculous.

Have others had these same issues?  I am hearing some things now, even from Verizon service that these are on going issues and something you just "deal with" with this phone.  I don't accept this!  I have 7 days left and am ready to return these phones but am Very **bleep** about paying $70 in restocking fees for phones that don't work to begin with!

Any input or assistance is much appreciated!

I understand your frustration as well as your concern because I too have a Fascinate.

This information is hot off the press. Beginning today, July 28,2011 there is another update that you will receive for the Fascinate.

From the main menu on your device, go to Settings>About Phone>System Updates>Check New

Symptoms Resolved:

  • A software change was made to address an issue causing the device to miss calls in some cases
  • Addressed an issue which is causing multiple recipients SMS messages from being sent out immediately. In some cases the message will sit in the pending state but will eventually going through
  • Addressed an issue causing SMS reply messages to go to an incorrect recipient in some cases
  • Addressed an issue where the device would only connect to a factory Bluetooth car kit about 25% of the time
  • A software change was made to add a pop up message which displayed when selecting the option to turn off data from the drop down menu. The Message says "You will no longer be able to use data applications such as Browser, email and You Tube via mobile network. Calls and text messages will continue to function"

For email other than gmail, you should use the app k-9 mail. Much better than the stock email app. As far as call quality, not sure what to tell you.

I loved my Fascinate until the last software upgrade the end of June.  Now the battery only lasts a few hours, reception is terrible, incoming calls don't always ring, it's just one problem after another.  I took it into the local Verizon store and was told by the employee (who also had a Fascinate) that they have been having major complaints from all Fascinate customers since the upgrade, including himself.  I have had this phone less than a year, and use it for work.  I cannot be missing phone calls in my line of work.  His only suggestion was to wait and see if a fix came out, which I have not seen or heard of yet, or to replace the phone.  The problem is not my phone, it is the software upgrade Verizon did.   I am ticked off I have to recharge my phone about every 4 hours just to function, and half my calls are missed anyway.
