Screen stays black but sounds work and camera indicator light works and undo light and open window light works

My galaxy S5 phone is on; my cell phone's screen stays black; the undo and open windows lights work; the led camera light in top left corner turns on as blue or sometimes red; removing the battery has no effect.

I think an app has messed my phone up. Any suggestions?

Well, I did the factory reset and guess what?  The screen problem seems to have disappeared!

WooHoo! Thank you for all your help and advice --if the problem starts again, I will let you know.

scottmcelwee1966, I am sorry to learn of the troubles you are having with the phone screen. I recently had to replace my phone due to a screen issue. We will get down to the bottom of this for you. Where you in the process of doing something on the phone when the screen went out? Is there any liquid or physical damage to the phone? While the phone is powered on have you tried taking out the battery and putting it back in?

The same thing happened to my S5, it happened after an update from Samsung! I wish I knew how to fix it. I can't afford to buy a new one.  😞

Taking out the battery and putting it back in sometimes works, but the I spend over an hour of many tries which is so frustrating. I have to keep it plugged in for the screen to stay on, although it flickers.

Ivykitty,

I don’t want to see you continue to have issues with your device. You mentioned that you thought it might have been an app that is causing this. Was there something new that you recently downloaded onto your device? Could you please confirm what software your phone is currently on? http://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-97648/

My screen problem appeared after a SAMSUNG update! There were two system updates: G900VVRU2BOE1 on July 7, 2015, and G90VVRU2BOG5 on August 13, 2015. It also appears that the Kernel Version was updated on July 7, 2015 to 3.4.0 dpi@SWHD7513 #1.

Build Number:  LRX21T.G900VVRU2BOG5

ivykitty - Thank you for the information you provided. Time has come to bring your screen back to life. Please press the power button until you see that the device lights are off. No need to have it plugged into the charger. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume up button for about 30 seconds. If it responds you van release both buttons. If it does not respond Press and hold dow n the Power Button and the Volume Down button for 30 seconds. If it respond release both buttons. Please let us know if the issue persists.

I have done this action many times over and over to get my screen to work. Sometimes it takes more than an hour doing it until the screen comes on.  Is there anything I can do to get the screen to stay on?

I really appreciate you trying to do that step many times Ivykitty  and apologize that the screen will not stay on. Let's try a different  approach to the problem. Have you tried to adjust the screen timeout settings? Here’s a link to the steps http://tiny.cc/iozd6x . When your at the link, select the first time user tab, locate the adjusting the Screen Timeout menu and follow it accordingly. Please ensure you select a setting that will keep it on for a while to see if it maintains keeping the screen on. Post back with the results.

I've tried that before with no changes. I tried it again just for fun, but still no good.  The screen will stay on for the time it was set for, but when the time was up, the screen flickers when plugged in, and goes off when on battery  (then I spend over an hour trying to get it back on.  So, I guess the next step is factory reset.

I really loved this phone when I first got it  (my dad bought it for me as a gift, since I have no income, and I can't really ask him for a new one because he lost his home in the Butte Fire in September!)  I totally researched the best phones and I chose the Galaxy S5 over the iPhone!  I can't afford to buy a new one and my life is on this one and don't know what to do.

Ivykitty,

That is an awful thing for your dad to go through. I do hope he is ok. We want to ensure your are in a properly working phone and getting to do all the things you enjoy to do with it. Your next step would be to do a Factory Reset. You will want to ensure you have everything backed up first. You may utilize the Verizon Cloud app: http://vz.to/1cQ9M2W Once you know everything is saved you may do the reset: http://vz.to/1EFPHSD Please let us know if you have any questions with these steps.

Well, after the factory reset, my phone worked again, BUT as the day went along and as the battery warmed up and after some of my apps were reinstalled, the problem reappeared.  I wish I could figure this out. Would an overheated battery cause this? I am going to try uninstalling a couple of apps and possibly try another factory reset if that doesn't work.  If you have any more suggestions, PLEASE let me know!

We want your phone to be fixed permanently Ivy. Knowing that your phone worked as intended right after a factory reset is indicative that the issue is associated with third party application conflicting with your phone. I recommend doing a factory reset and ensure to disable Automatic Restore http://spr.ly/6583BRq7P to prevent any third party application from installing automatically. Then install your third party applications one at a time, and run your phone for a few hours before installing the next application. This will allow you to identify any conflicting application as your phone will start acting up, and then you can remove that application for good.
