A while ago my boyfriend purchased a Galaxy s5 from Amazon. He got a sim card for it to work with MetroPCS but recently upgraded to a Galaxy s8. He gave me the Galaxy s5 to replace my older cell phone.
I've been trying to change my device and activate the Galaxy s5 online, but every time I enter in the Device ID and press submit, it says "error while processing your request" or something along the lines of that. I've been trying to call customer support and am very unhappy. I tried to get a live chat yesterday at like 7 (before they close - according to the verizon website), and after two hours of checking back and forth - I gave up
Come on man! Today I found a sim card from an older verizon wireless phone i had that seems to fit perfectly into the glaxaxy s5. When i go to the about section in the settings of the phone, it even recognizes my phone number!
I'm getting kinda frustrated. Please help

The Galaxy S5 had 2 model versions for the US. One works on GSM carrier networks like Metro/AT&T/T-Mobile/Cricket, the other model works on CDMA networks like Sprint/Verizon/Boost/US Cellular.
Your phone lacks the hardware to operate on Verizon's network so that's why it won't work

If you go into settings-more networks-mobile data-network mode. When you tap network mode what is the preferred network mode?

We understand your concern, Haillee. There is a chance this device is not compatible with our network. You can check compatibility by following this link, https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/. If the device is compatible, you might need a new SIM Card. If you are a postpaid customer, you can get one for free at any corporate Verizon Wireless locations. If you are a Prepaid customer, you can contact our Prepaid department for more information, 888-294-6804.
