Since the latest lollipop update, I have gotten multiple (per hour) text notification tones without the icon or a text message. It's beyond annoying.

I was just about to write the exact same question, and then make the comment that others have made... which is that with every software update on the GS5, what was once a really decent device is has become an aggravating device that I will only use until I earn an upgrade. Then it's goodbye Samsung... And maybe so long Verizon - I don't have time for this.

It goes way beyond frustrating and aggravating.

Thank you for making me feel not so insane. I do remember my device doing this and I thought I was going crazy; it didn't happen as often as it seems to be happening to you.
I tried a few things, but something I'd suggest is going into:
settings>storage>cached data and select OK and restart your device
See if that helps.

Did that, rebooted, turned off NFC and S Beam... still that annoying tone
continues

Is the tone one of your notification tones? I have mine set to be different for certain things so perhaps try and backtrack it to an associated app.

It is the specific tone for text notifications; I've checked the other
applications as well. Thanks for the suggestion.

If you have any text threads you want to keep, back those up.
Then go into settings>application>application manager>message+ (assuming that is the messaging service you use)
delete the cache, delete the data and restart your device.

Thanks. I'll have to try that tonight when I can back them up.

I don't know for certain it deletes your threads, but I always say to back them up JUST in case.
I should clarify, just back up your text messages, it doesn't have to be your whole device. It will only delete message+ data.
