samsung cut off when plugging into car charge with disconnet battery. Works find on ac current. 2nd phone that has done this.

That is certainly quite interesting! Reviewing the manually there would be no specification whether or not this should or should not occur with the battery removed. However, it's possible that the device may require a specific power output to charge without the battery connected. You may want to reach out to Samsung for further support http://www.samsung.com/us/support/.
