my fascinate is now 6 months old, running stock eclair EA28

gps locks within 5 seconds

i never get a force close

battery lasts 2 days easy

email is instant

mms/text messages are flawless

all in all its pretty much a perfect phone

now how is this accomplished

1. do not use a task killer

2.  only install apps from reliable sources

3. turn off gps/data/wifi/ect when not needed

4. reboot daily (i do it every morning)

5. avoid social networking sites(facebook, twitter)

6. email setting @ 1hour

7. use common sense

Great suggestions and they do help but it still comes down to the issue that if the software were properly tested and approved prior to release you wouldn't have to disable the features that make a smartphone.  By disabling everything you turn your device into a normal cell phone and that is not what folks buy them for.

notice i said when not needed.  do you need gps 24/7? do you need email 24/7?

social networkings sites are known to have malware embedded in thier adds.  it comes from reselling the adds so often they have no clue as to whats happening in them

it all boils down to #7

I'd be interested to hear how this works for you after you update to Froyo.

at this time i am not planning on updating to froyo, no need to, it does not offer me anything that i dont have now

in the future if i must, then it will be a custom, debloated, tested, stable version

Running stock Froyo with above suggestions will not produce much difference.  The one thing I do notice and need is the updated 10.3 flashplayer for some websites.

And bluestar when you are ready to make the big jump I highly recommend the setup you see in my signature.
