I want to delete some pictures to free up some space but can't seem to do it.
When I select all and then click on delete the select check goes away and I'm right back like it was, can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

It depends on how they are stored on your phone. Are these pictures you took with your phone or just uploaded/saved images? If you open through gallery it should allow you select multiple images for deletion. Another option would always be to plug you phone into you computer (make sure to mount the SD card) and from the computer delete the pictures.
The pictures were uploaded from the computer, I tried connecting the phone to the PC but the I didn't see the pictures I want to get rid of in the drive.
What I want to get rid of is a folder with 345 pictures that got on my phone from my computer, I don't know what I did to put them on the phone but all I want to do is take them off, thanks.
