If you don't already have some voicemail app installed, I'm guessing you have a Verizon phone and opening the voicemail app is making the phone download Verizon's Visual Voicemail app. A lot of people like seeing a text version of their voicemails instead of using the *86 voicemails. You can still dial *86 for plain voicemail or try long-pressing the 1 key on your phone's keypad while in the phone app.
