why are my recent apps and home buttons not responding?

yesterday I noticed my recent apps button is not responding at all. Also my home button does not take me home. I tried the safe mode process found in trouble shooting and the buttons still did not work in safe mode. I use my phone for work, so I have my VPN key on there so I can't just factory reboot, even thought I don't think factory reset will help.

This helps us go down the right path. Is there any physical or liquid damage on the device? Do you have a case on the phone that could possibly be hindering the keys? Also, did anything change recently on the device? New software or new application that could lead to having these issues?

I have the same problem along with the restart and power off doesnt work no matter which function you try to power off or restart my ohone and the touch pad where your emoji button, clipboard, talk-to-text, and predictive text options are. The last time this happened all it needed was a google play store update and itnfixed everytjing, so that was the first thing i tried this time, but it didnt work this cause time cause its up to date, along with any other updates, theyre all current and up to date. I dont have any VPN numbers or anything like that that i need to save, just need these problems fixed, its drving me crazy thwt i cant use the things/options that i use EVERYDAY!!

Unless you have one of those thick "glass" type screen protectors where you need to set your touchscreen for enhanced sensitivity so the screen protector isn't interfering, it's possible you've got a hardware problem with the phone. 😞

You didn't say whether you have an Android or an iPhone, but I found this elsewhere for potential fixes to try with Android phones:
